Andrew Gwynne response to NAO report on financial sustainability of local authorities

Andrew Gwynne MP, Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, commenting on the NAO report on financial stability of local councils, said:

"This report lays bare the damage the Government is doing to our public services and the need for radical rethink of the way we fund Local Government. From bin collections to libraries, local services are suffering death by a thousand cuts.

“After nearly eight years of Conservative government, councils have lost nearly 50 per cent of their funding from central government and faced £6.3 billion in cuts to adult social care. 

“Working people and ordinary families are paying the price of councils being forced to cut back and close essential services. We need to elect as many Labour councillors as possible on 3 May to stand up to the Conservatives’ cuts.”
