How to cut rising knife crime in London

There were 14,521 knife crime offences in London in the year to January 2018, compared to 11,416 in the year to January 2017. That’s a 27 per cent rise.

Following the Mayor’s decision to increase the police precept element of council tax, £15 million will be allocated to the Metropolitan Police to tackle knife crime. 

Each London borough has its own action plan for tackling knife crime.

Do the plans involve prevention, stop and search or tougher enforcement?

The London Assembly Police and Crime Committee will tomorrow hold a question and answer session on a number of key policing matters in London. Other subjects for discussion include:

• Changes to frontline policing with the introduction of Basic Command Units
• Making Notting Hill Carnival safer
• Inadequate disclosure processes in rape and sexual assault cases
• Violence against women and girls

• Sophie Linden, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC)
