Last night, during the passing of the Automated and Electrics
Vehicles Bill in the House of Commons, , MP for Washington and
Sunderland West, called for the Bill to be “a leap
to a Leaf”.
During the debate at Report Stage of the Bill, Sharon raised
points about Part 2, Clauses 9, 10, 11 and 12; which all focus on
aspects of this growing industry: the provision of charging
points, ensuring as open access as possible to charging points
and the growth in smart charging.
In her speech, MP concluded that:
“Overall, this is a very welcome Bill that I know will have
significant effects on Nissan in my constituency and on the wider
electric vehicle industry. I hope that as the Bill progresses we
will see further strengthening to make sure that, as we go into
the future, electric vehicles become more and more accessible to
drivers and, as we so desperately need to be doing right now,
that this helps to reduce pollution.”
Following the debate, MP commented:
“It is important that this Bill ensures that as many drivers
as possible have the confidence to make the leap
to a Leaf and go electric on our roads.
“There is much to be welcomed in this Bill but there are lots
of aspects that can be strengthened and built upon and I hope
that as it continues through Parliament that this is
ensured.
“It is crucial in an era when air pollution and climate
change are becoming ever-more concerning issues across the world,
that we are doing our bit to reduce emissions and pollution; but
we can only do that if the proper infrastructure and support is
there for consumers to make the switch to electric.”
