Can policing in London cope? Mayor and Met Commissioner answer Assembly questions

2017 has been a challenging year for the Met Police. While crime in London remains lower than a decade ago, it is rising. Offences in the 12 months to October 2017 were up just over 6 per cent compared to the previous year.^[1]

The Mayor has called for an increase in police funding for London.  He believes “the slice of the pie that policing receives is too small” and that the police grant needs to be increased.

The types of crime contributing to this rise are changing. ‘High harm’ offences—such as sexual exploitation, knife crime and serious violence—have come to the fore.

At a full meeting of the London Assembly tomorrow, Assembly Members will ask these questions and more:

• Challenges and opportunities for policing in 2018
• Anti-knife campaign for young Londoners
• Reform of the Met

The guests are:

• Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London
• Cressida Dick CBE QPM, Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis, Met Police
