Lords EU Committee to hear from TUC and CBI on "deal or no deal" brexit

The Committee is considering the implications of a failure to reach agreement on transition – a ‘no deal’ scenario. The inquiry is also examining the key components of any implementation, or transition period including the likely cost to the UK, including any ongoing budgetary contributions.

The Committee will take evidence from the TUC and CBI on Tuesday 7 November in Committee Room 3 of the House of Lords. The session will start at 16:05. Giving evidence to the Committee will be: 

• John Foster, Director of Campaigns, CBI
• Owen Tudor, Head of European Union and International Relations, TUC

Areas the Committee will question the witnesses on include:

• The extent to which the Prime Minister’s Florence speech and subsequent announcements have provided clarity on the Government’s negotiating position on Brexit.
   
• What would be the implications, either positive or negative, if there were to be ‘no deal’ on the future UK-EU trade relationship? Is there a difference between an agreed ‘no deal’ and chaotic ‘no deal’?
   
• How likely are jobs and activity to relocate away from the UK, and where will they relocate to? What will the scale of such relocation be?
   
• Whether the Government is doing enough to plan for a ‘no deal’ scenario and when businesses will activate their contingency plans? And what impact do you expect these plans to have upon the wider economy?
   
• Whether a transition period will be a necessary step toward a lasting agreement and what the components of a transition arrangement are likely to be?
