150 members of parliament from across the Commonwealth will
convene in London to engage in a new Forum specifically for
Parliamentarians ahead of the UK-hosted Commonwealth Heads of Government
Meeting 2018, more commonly known as CHOGM.
The Commonwealth Parliamentarians’
Forum organised by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association
UK (CPA UK) will take place from 26 February-1 March 2018.
Parliamentarians will examine the CHOGM theme – ‘Towards a Common
Future’ – and the four main goals:
· Sustainability
· Fairness
· Security
· Prosperity
They will then return to their capitals better able to inform and
influence their governments ahead of CHOGM itself, taking place
in London from 16-18 April 2018.
The Chair of CPA UK’s Executive Committee, MP, said:
“At the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association UK (CPA UK), we
believe effective parliamentary engagement leads to better
sustainable development across the Commonwealth.
“The Commonwealth Parliamentarians’ Forum is a valuable
opportunity to ensure those that represent Commonwealth
democracies feed effectively into the Commonwealth Heads of
Government Meeting 2018 (CHOGM 2018).”
The UK Foreign Secretary, The Rt Hon MP,
said:
"CPA UK does excellent work to strengthen the links between UK
parliamentarians and their counterparts across the Commonwealth,
helping to strengthen democratic institutions around the world,
while enriching our own parliament immensely."
CHOGM 2018
CHOGM 2018 will be the most ambitious hosted by the UK so far. It
will bring together Commonwealth leaders, Foreign Ministers, and
thousands of people from businesses to civil society to represent
the Commonwealth’s vibrant and diverse global network.
CHOGM is hosted by a Commonwealth country every 2 years and is
followed by the hosting country taking a 2 year Chair-in-Office
role which the UK will hold from 2018-2020 following Malta’s
2016-2018 tenure.
