Additional funding for technical education is a step in the right direction, says ATL

Commenting on Justine Greening’s announcement of additional funding for technical education, Dr Mary Bousted, general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL), said:

“We are delighted that the Government has finally listened and is planning to give additional funds to help further education colleges develop the knowledge and skills of their staff. ATL has fought long and hard for funding for professional development of further education teachers.

“This additional money comes not a moment too soon because the FE sector is on the brink of huge changes with the introduction of T-levels between 2019 and 2022. Highly trained FE staff will be vital to help learners develop the skills necessary to support a strong post-Brexit economy.

“Colleges will require much more funding to deliver what the Government is asking of them, but this is a welcome step in the right direction.”
