Housing minister offering blame, not solutions on tower blocks - Davey

Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary Ed Davey has attacked Alok Sharma after a disastrous interview in which the housing minister appeared to blame everyone bar the government for mounting concerns about the lack of safety inspections of tower blocks that might have potentially lethal cladding.

Ed Davey said:

“Theresa May took personal charge of this when she announced last week that there would be 100 inspections a day. The government needs to explain why they are not happening.

“It’s outrageous for Alok Sharma to blame councils when this government has starved them of resources. Theresa May needs to understand there is no point convening Cobra meetings and announcing action plans to the media if she doesn’t then follow through and actually do something.

“She owes it to the victims of Grenfell Tower to get this sorted to ensure there is no chance of a repeat of that terrible tragedy.”
