Richard Burgon MP, Labour’s Shadow Justice Secretary, responding to the HMIP report on Brixton prison, said:

“This inspection defines the Conservatives’ prison crisis in a single report. 

“Brixton has all the hallmarks of what has gone wrong on their watch: rising violence, freely available drugs, under-staffing and overcrowding. 

“After seven years of neglect, our prisons are in desperate need of reform but the Tories seem to have abandoned any pretence of fixing the mess they have created.

"Labour would recruit 3,000 more prison officers to tackle under-staffing and publish annual reports on prisoner-staff ratios with a view to maintaining safety and ending overcrowding."
