The Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee will focus
on legal and tax issues around employment and the gig economy at
the first public evidence session of its inquiry into the future
world of work and rights of workers. The session can be watched

The Committee will hear from the representatives of the
Employment Lawyers Association, Office for Tax Simplification, HR
Dept. Ltd., New Economic Forum and TUC.
The session will look at protections for gig economy and agency
workers, responsibilities for tax reporting, umbrella and
personal service companies and the role of trade unions. The
Committee will also consider the impact of Brexit on the rights
of workers and at how the legal system can be flexible enough to
accommodate the use of technology while supporting those who
provide goods and services.
The inquiry is focused on the rapidly changing nature of work,
and the status and rights of agency workers, the self-employed
and those working in the gig economy. The Committee is also
looking at issues such as low-pay and poor working conditions for
people working in these non-traditional employee roles.
