Resignations

• Jamie Reed announced on December 21 he would be stepping down as the MP for Copeland at the end of January.
• Tristram Hunt announced he was resigning as MP for Stoke-on-trent Central to become Director of the Victoria and Albert Museum.
• Lord Carlile of Berriew quit the Liberal Democrats and now sits as non-affiliated.

Government appointments in the House of Lords

• Baroness Neville-Rolfe as Commercial Secretary (Minister of State) at the Treasury (having previously been a Minister of State at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy).
• Lord Henley as a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State* at the Department for Work and Pensions in addition to his current role as a Government Whip.
• Lord O’Shaughnessy as a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State* at the Department of Health and a Government Whip.
• Lord Prior of Brampton as a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (having previously been Under Secretary of State at the Department of Health).
• Baroness Buscombe and Baroness Vere of Norbiton as Government Whips*.

• Baroness Chisholm of Owlpen, previously a Government Whip, has left the Government.
• Baroness Goldie continues as a Government Whip but will be unpaid.
• Baroness Shields continues as a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State* at the Home Office (but has ceased to be Under Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport).

By-election

• Dr Caroline Johnson was elected at Sleaford and North Hykeham at a by-election on December 8.

• Martin McGuinness resigned as Deputy First Minister, and under the terms of the power sharing agreement, Arlene Foster lost her role as First Minister. Elections for the Northern Ireland Assembly have been announced for March 2.
