An initial list of transmission infrastructure projects which are
expected to be eligible for the Bill Discount Scheme for
communities living near new transmission network infrastructure
projects.
More projects will be announced as the scheme progresses.
Background
The electricity transmission network is the main system that
moves electricity around the country. It carries large amounts of
electricity from places where it is made, such as wind farms or
power stations, to the areas where people need it. This process
often requires pylons and overhead power lines.
Why we need to upgrade the network
Most of Britain's electricity grid was built in the 1960s and our
electricity needs have changed. Upgrading the network will help
connect new sources of electricity, strengthen Britain's energy
security, and deliver a more affordable energy system for
billpayers.
About the Bill Discount Scheme
The government believes that where communities live close to this
vital infrastructure, they should directly benefit from it.
The Bill Discount Scheme is a government scheme that will give
eligible households £250 a year off their electricity bills for
10 years. It is for households living within 500 metres of new or
significantly upgraded electricity transmission infrastructure,
such as pylons.
Payments for eligible projects under the scheme are expected to
start in the first half of 2027.
Scheme eligibility
The list of projects should give households some indication of
whether they may be eligible for the scheme. Eligibility will
begin being confirmed in the first half of 2027 for projects that
have started construction.
If you think you are likely to be eligible for the scheme, you do
not need to do anything at this stage. Most eligible households
will automatically receive the discount so will not need to take
any action, even when the scheme goes live.
If any action is required you will receive further information
from the government, or Ofgem, as the
scheme administrator.
