Lords committee report to criticise overuse of Pet Parasite Medications

The House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee will be publishing its report Paws for Concern: Pets, Parasites and Pollution on Wednesday 5 August.

After hearing from a range of witnesses, the report is likely to warn that that the intensive and unnecessary overuse of Pet Parasite Medications (PPMs), often promoted by the pet health industry, is not supported by robust scientific evidence. Moreover, through their release into the environment from our homes, they are potentially causing widespread damage to aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.

The report is also likely to call for a ban on the general sale of off-the-shelf and unchecked online pet treatments for fleas and ticks (unless there is a thorough assessment and advice given to pet owners) and raise concerns about how the pet health industry appears to be worryingly embedded within the regulatory and advice-setting frameworks.
