The Public Office (Accountability) Bill is returning to the
House of Commons today

Over recent months, the government has worked closely with
them as well as national security experts to bring the Bill
back to Parliament.

This law will mean that the state and those working for it
will be held accountable, and victims will get the justice
they deserve.
The Hillsborough Bill is returning to the House of Commons today,
marking a significant milestone for families and campaigners who
have waited decades for justice.
The Government amendments tabled for debate today focus on the
national security element of the Bill, following months of
working around the clock with the families and campaigners on how
organisations being transparent with the public will apply to
intelligence agencies while never compromising on our national
security.
Amendments to the Bill will mean sensitive information relating
to the UK's national security can be disclosed to inquiries and
other investigations securely and appropriately.
The duty of candour and assistance will apply to individual
employees of the intelligence services but with a secure process
in place to protect sensitive information.
From Hillsborough to Grenfell, Windrush to the Grooming Gangs, it
has been far too easy for justice to be denied for working class
people when the state makes mistakes. The Public Office
(Accountability) Act recognises that and fundamentally shifts the
balance towards accountability and justice.
The Prime Minister, Sir , said:
This landmark law is a tribute to the incredible families and
campaigners who have spent decades and decades fighting to get
justice for their loved ones.
They suffered unimaginable grief, and never gave up. If it wasn't
for their dedication, Hillsborough Law would never have happened.
This will make sure nobody else has to suffer like they did. I am
proud to bring back this Bill, delivering a law not just for the
97, but a law for everyone.
The Minister for the Cabinet Office, , said:
This is a significant victory for the Hillsborough families who
rightly deserve justice after years of campaigning.
The Hillsborough Law will change the balance of power so the
state can never hide from the people it is supposed to
serve.

The return of the Hillsborough Law to Parliament today is a
historic moment for our country and a lasting tribute to the 97,
their families and campaigners.
Nothing can undo the terrible loss they suffered or give them
back the decades spent fighting for the truth. But their courage
has changed our nation.
This law will help ensure public authorities act with honesty and
openness, and that no bereaved family is ever again left to walk
alone.
