Gambling Commission to give evidence on tackling match-fixing in sport

The House of Lords International Agreements Committee will tomorrow continue its scrutiny of the Council of Europe Convention on the Manipulation of Sports Competitions (the Macolin Convention), by questioning the Gambling Commission and other relevant bodies.  

Giving evidence will be: 

• John Pierce, Director of Enforcement and Intelligence, Gambling Commission  

• Nigel Mawer, Co-Chair, Sports Betting Integrity Forum  

• Karen Moorhouse, CEO, International Tennis Integrity Agency 

Questions the committee is likely to ask include: 

• Is the problem of manipulating UK sports competitions getting worse, or changing in nature? Are any particular sporting actors, betting services or contexts more at risk? 

• How significant are cross-border activity and organised crime groups in relation to the manipulation of sports? 

• What are the Macolin Convention's strengths, and is there anywhere it could be improved? 

• What impact has the Convention had since it was concluded, and to what extent has its impact been limited by the slowness of countries such as the UK to ratify it? 

• To what extent has the UK already adopted measures necessary to comply with the Convention, and where will further steps be needed to ensure full compliance if and when the UK ratifies the agreement?
