Trail of the Prime Minister's speech on his plan to protect
children's wellbeing online.
Prime Minister will say:
How we keep kids safe online is one of the biggest debates of our
time. As a dad, I know every parent wants their child to grow up
safe and happy.
This is a choice about whose side we're on: families across the
country, or a status quo that isn't working.
People rightly expect action, and this government will always
stand up for parents and put children first.
That's why we will call time on a system that's failing our kids
and take bold action to give every child the best possible start
in life.
Background
- The Prime Minister will deliver a press conference today
[Monday 15th June] setting out world-leading
action to protect children's wellbeing online
- This follows a national conversation and extensive
consultation which saw over 116,000 responses from parents,
industry and young people themselves
- The Prime Minister will set out how this government is
responding to calls for change from parents all over the country
and how the measures being announced will act as a line in the
sand to protect future generations from harms online
- Over 83% of parents who responded to the consultation said
that social media risks outweigh the benefits, and 90% back a
minimum age of 16 before kids can access social media platforms
- His announcement will build on the government's ongoing work
to fight for the rights of children across the country so that
every child gets the best start in life
- Last week he challenged tech companies so that Britain will
be the first country in the world to make it impossible for
children to take, share or view nude images
- And yesterday the government set out a new package to give
children greater access to enriching activities both in and out
of school, so that no matter their background or where they live,
every child gets the support and opportunity to build skills,
develop experience and find their talents.
- Operational notes with details of accreditation for the press
conference and pool opportunities will be sent in the usual way.
