The House of Lords Numeracy for Life Committee continues its
inquiry on Thursday 4 June by taking evidence on
student support and early years education.
The session can be followed live or afterwards on Parliament
TV or in person in Committee Room 3, Palace
of Westminster from 10.50am.
Giving evidence on how to support students who struggle
with maths will be:
- Sarah Waite,
Founder & CEO, Get Further;
- Lord Baker,
Director, Baker Dearing Educational Trust;
- Kate Ambrosi,
CEO, Baker Dearing Educational Trust.
Members are expected to ask questions on:
- whether existing level 2 qualifications provide students with
the necessary numeracy skills;
- the most effective ways to support students who are taking a
level 2 qualification;
- addressing inequalities in GCSE maths attainment;
- how numeracy skills are embedded in technical subjects.
Giving evidence on how babies and children learn numeracy
will be:
- Professor Brian Butterworth,
Emeritus Professor of Cognitive Neuropsychology, University
College London (UCL);
- Professor Camilla Gilmore,
Professor of Mathematical Cognition, Loughborough University,
and Director, ESRC Centre for Early Mathematics Learning;
- Professor Jo Van Herwegen,
Professor of Developmental Psychology and Education, UCL
Institute of Education.
Members are expected to ask questions on:
- the importance and impact of developing maths skills during
early years;
- the role of parents and caregivers in helping children with
maths and numeracy;
- the effectiveness of the current early years maths framework,
assessment and guidance;
- training and support for those teaching maths and numeracy to
young children.
