The Prime Minister opened Cabinet by inviting the leaders of the
Commons and the Lords to outline business in both Houses,
including the Commons' consideration of Lords Amendments to the
Crime & Policing Bill today.
Turning to Iran, the Prime Minister said that whilst the
ceasefire was welcome, the situation remained extremely serious,
with the global impacts clear for all to see. He referenced his
recent meetings and calls with international leaders, including
the Prime Minister of Pakistan last Friday, and emphasised the
importance of the ceasefire paving the way to a lasting peace,
with a return to safe and free navigation through the Strait of
Hormuz.
The Prime Minister said the UK was now working with France
and dozens of other countries to support this. He added it
would require both diplomatic and political cooperation,
alongside significant logistical support to safeguard the Strait.
The Prime Minister said France and the UK would co-host a leaders
summit in Paris this Friday to advance work towards a
coordinated, independent, multinational plan. He said the Middle
East Response Committee would meet after Cabinet to progress work
on the impacts of the conflict.
The Foreign Secretary outlined continuing diplomatic work with
international partners. The Chancellor then set out the ongoing
economic impacts of the conflict, ahead the start of the IMF
conference in the US later today.
