Today [Thursday 19th March 2026] Kemi Badenoch MP, Leader of the Conservative Party, will launch our 2026 Local Elections Campaign with a pledge to get Britain working again. At a rally in London, Kemi Badenoch will set out that only the Conservatives have a clear plan to tackle the challenges our country faces, and to deliver for local communities. Across the United Kingdom, local residents have felt the full force of Labour's mismanagement – with taxes at record levels, growth stalling and communities suffering. And instead of reversing course, Labour is continuing to double down. This cannot go on. Under new leadership, the Conservatives are setting out a clear alternative. By cutting business rates for thousands of retail, hospitality, and leisure businesses we will back our high streets and revitalise these centres of community across the country. Our Cheap Power Plan will deliver £165 off electricity bills for consumers, lowering household energy bills and supporting businesses. We will also take back our streets with 10,000 extra police officers and introduce hotspot policing to tackle knife crime and shoplifting. No other Party has the team or the plan to deliver. Reform's one-man band provides nothing but empty slogans and copy and paste policies with no actual substance behind it, and no means of delivering. Their promise to deliver lower council tax last year, followed by tax rises across the councils they control including a staggering 9% in Worcestershire, shows their word simply can't be trusted. Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrats are too concerned with virtue signalling stunts and playing international politics to be a real opposition to Labour, sitting idly by as the Government rams through more and more damaging legislation. Kemi Badenoch MP is expected to say: “7 weeks today… people up and down this country are going to be given a choice. They can choose… to vote for one of many parties in Britain… telling them what's wrong with this country… Parties who haven't bothered to do the work to solve any of your problems… Parties who are going to put up your Council Tax. Or… they can vote for a Party that can actually fix things. They can vote for a new Conservative Party… under new leadership … The only party in British politics with a plan… to make life better… where you live. .... That means abolishing businesses rates for most pubs, restaurants and high street shops. Getting our high streets working again. It means our Cheap Power Plan… cutting energy bills for families and businesses… Helping families to make ends meet… and businesses to make a profit. It means scrapping Stamp Duty on people's homes. Getting people moving again. Helping those who want to put down roots and start a family. …. And… we will pay for it by cutting the welfare bill… by making sure every person who can get a job, does. Taxpayers are struggling enough without having to pay millions of people to sit at home doing nothing. Not everyone's going to like this. That's okay. We are no longer going to try to please everyone all the time. Some people want nationalised industry with Nigel Farage… Some people want more benefit spending with Labour… Some people want bigger boobs with Zack Polanski. Fine. We've got a better offer. We're for the people who want jobs and opportunities. Who want society to judge people based on their merit. We can only fix Britain's problems if we're clear about what we believe in. .... We have to show people that this is a new Conservative Party... It's not going to happen overnight... But it starts by delivering for people... wherever we are given the chance. There is only one party that can build a stronger economy… and a stronger country. That is the Conservative Party.” ENDS Notes to Editors
