Home Office to give evidence on settlement, citizenship and integration

Tomorrow the House of Lords Justice and Home Affairs Committee will be hearing from the Home Office as it concludes its inquiry into settlement, citizenship, and integration.  

The session will focus on changes to the immigration and asylum rules, the work of the Home Office – with particular regard to data collection and assessment - and the process and value of obtaining citizenship.  

Giving evidence will be:

• Mike Tapp MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Citizenship and Immigration, Home Office  

• Dan Hobbs, Director General, Migration and Borders Group, Home Office 

Possible questions include:

• What is the rationale behind applying immigration rules retrospectively? Are the proposed changes legal if applied retrospectively? 

• Does the Government value migrants obtaining citizenship? What are they doing to promote it if so? 

• Is the Home Office satisfied with the collection of exit data in the UK? Does it know how many and who are in the country at any given time? 

• What is the Home Office/Government's approach to producing and publishing impact assessments? 

• How will the Home Office ensure that complex new contribution-based settlement rules are implemented without repeating the documentation and decision-making failures that contributed to the Windrush scandal, and how are the recommendations from the Windrush Lessons Learned Review progress update being embedded in this process? 

• Are the permissible reasons for depriving someone of their citizenship the correct ones? 

• What is the Government's approach to integration? Is there a strategy? 

• What does the Government envisage ‘refreshing' in the Life in the UK test?
