BBC’s coverage of the BAFTAs: CMS Committee writes to Director General Tim Davie

The CMS Committee has written to the BBC to seek an explanation as to how a racial slur came to be broadcast by the corporation as part of coverage of last weekend's BAFTA film awards.

The letter from Chair Dame Caroline Dinenage to Director General Tim Davie asks why the language was not edited out prior to broadcast and about the specific systems in place to prevent the broadcasting of such language.

It also questions whether lessons have been learnt from previous incidents and what is being done to prevent something similar happening again.

The Committee previously raised concerns about editorial standards and decision making following the broadcasting of offensive language during the BBC's coverage of last year's Glastonbury festival.
