Large increase in affordable homes in Wales but target will not be met, says Audit Wales

Audit Wales has provided an update on our analysis of the latest affordable housing delivery data in Wales.

The update also reflects on the Welsh Government's progress in responding to the recommendations from our 2024 Affordable Housing report. In that report we raised concerns about whether the target for delivering 20,000 homes could be met without significant additional investment.

Our follow‑up work examines what has changed since our original report, the progress made, and the areas that still require attention.

We found that the Welsh Government and wider housing sector have made significant progress against the target, and the Welsh Government has improved transparency about the way it reports on the target.

But recent projections suggest the Welsh Government will fall short of the target. And we highlight a range of remaining issues that the incoming government will be faced with after the May elections.
