New Lords inquiry on stablecoins in the UK to hear evidence

On Wednesday 4 February the House of Lords Financial Services Regulation Committee, as part of its new inquiry on the growth and proposed regulation of stablecoins in the UK, will hear evidence from two witnesses.

At 10.05am, the committee will hear from:

• Chris Giles, Financial Times.

At 11.00am, the committee will hear from:

• Professor Arthur E. Wilmarth, Jr., Professor Emeritus of Law at George Washington University Law School.

Topics the committee is likely to cover in this session include:

• Where stablecoins are currently competing, or are expected to compete, with traditional banking and other financial services intermediaries.
• The opportunities that stablecoins present to the UK's financial system.
• The risks that stablecoins present to the UK's monetary policy and financial stability.
• Whether stablecoins are a means of payment or settlement or investment.
• How safe and ‘stable' stablecoins are and whether they can facilitate cheap and efficient cross-border transactions.
• The regulation of stablecoins in the US as introduced through the GENIUS Act.

The committee has published a call for evidence. The deadline for written submissions is Wednesday 11 March 2026.
