NAO to give evidence on settlement, citizenship and integration

Tomorrow the House of Lords Justice and Home Affairs Committee will be hearing from the National Audit Office as part of its inquiry into settlement, citizenship, and integration. It will also be hearing from the former Chief Statistician at the Home Office.  

The session will focus on metrics and data around migration and integration and the Home Office's monitoring and responsibilities.  

Giving evidence will be:

• Richard Baynham, Senior Audit Manager, The National Audit Office 

• Tim Phillips, Director, Home Affairs Value-for-Money, The National Audit Office 

• Jon Simmons, lately Head of Immigration Statistics and Chief Statistician at The Home Office 

Possible questions include: 

• How does the Home Office monitor compliance with the immigration rules? 

• How does the Home Office measure people leaving the UK? 

• What consideration has been given to determining the most relevant migration metrics and their presentation? 

• How do other countries use and collect migration data and what can we learn from them? 

• Is policy being generated that cannot be implemented? 

• What aspects of migration does the Home Office have direct control over and what aspects are the responsibility of other departments? 

• What does the data show best supports integration outcomes?
