Justice Minister Naomi has spoken of the crucial role prison
officers play in helping to build a safer community.
Speaking on the latest recruitment campaign for Custody Prison
Officers by the Northern Ireland Prison Service, the Minister
said:
“The Northern Ireland Prison Service plays a vital, yet often
unseen, role in our justice system. Being a Prison Officer is
about much more than security; it is about being a role model, a
mentor, and a catalyst for change.
“Prisons are looking for people who can meet the challenges of a
complex environment with professionalism and integrity, while
also having the empathy to support and challenge people to
change.
“The role is both challenging and rewarding. It's challenging as
prisons are complex environments where some prisoners are
dangerous; some will also suffer from mental health issues and
addictions; whilst others are extremely vulnerable. It's
rewarding because you will have the opportunity to make a
difference to people's lives and play a key role in making
Northern Ireland safer.
“As the recruitment campaign highlights, ‘it's not a job for
everyone, but then, you're not everyone'. If you feel you
have the skills to become a prison officer, I would encourage you
to apply.”
