Low income households across Scotland have benefitted from
reductions of hundreds of pounds off their council tax bills.
The Council Tax Reduction scheme has delivered £4.5 billion in
relief since it was introduced in 2013.
The latest figures show more than 450,000 recipients were
eligible for Council Tax Reduction in October 2025,
saving on average over £900 per household a year.
The scheme forms part of cross-government efforts to tackle
poverty and the cost of living, alongside the Scottish Child
Payment, Winter Heating Payments and early learning and childcare
support.
Finance Secretary said:
“We will continue to take action to deliver on our key priority
to reduce child poverty. Scotland is the only part of the UK
where relative child poverty rates fell in the last year.
“The cost of living continues to impact hard working families and
the Council Tax Reduction initiative ensures households will not
face council tax bills that are unaffordable.
“I urge people to check their eligibility for Council Tax
reduction and discounts, and other financial support that may be
available by visiting our online resources or by contacting their
local authority.”
