International experts to give evidence on global trends in citizenship and immigration policy

Tomorrow the House of Lords Justice and Home Affairs Committee will be hearing from international experts, as it continues its inquiry into settlement, citizenship and integration.  

The session will take place on Tuesday 16 December 2025 at 10:30am and can be followed live on Parliament TV. 

Giving evidence will be: 

• Professor Gareth Davies, Professor of European Law at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam  

• Professor Christian Joppke, Institute of Sociology, University of Bern  

• Professor Ricky van Oers, Professor of Immigrant Inclusion and Law, Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, and Assistant Professor, Centre for Migration Law, Radboud University, The Netherlands 

Possible questions include: 

• How is integration assessed? What role should local authorities and civil society play in supporting integration versus national policy and structures? 

• What factors most strongly drive successful integration? 

• Does the use of temporary or highly restrictive visas undermine long-term integration prospects? 

• What are the alternatives to citizenship tests? 

• How are language requirements used at different stages of the settlement journey? 

• What are the typical advantages associated with citizenship versus remaining on right to residency/indefinite leave to remain (for example, voting rights)? 

• What does the revocation of citizenship say about a state's view of its citizens? How does the UK's use of Citizenship Deprivation Orders compare internationally?
