Justice Committee to examine the impact of unsupported housing needs on reoffending

The Justice Committee will explore the issues of housing and accommodation for ex-offenders during the first evidence session of the second part of its inquiry into rehabilitation and resettlement: ending the cycle of reoffending.

MPs on the cross-party committee chaired by Labour MP Andy Slaughter will examine how the Government supports accommodation needs for those involved in the criminal justice system, and whether it is sufficient.

Discussion will focus on the impact of unsupported housing needs on reoffending, the Sentencing Bill and reform to community supervision. The committee will also assess the risk of homelessness for those involved in the criminal justice system.

The committee's first report of this inquiry focusing on rehabilitation in prisons, published in November, concluded prison overcrowding, staffing shortages and deteriorating infrastructure is having a ‘profound impact on the ability of prisons to deliver rehabilitation'.
