Is licensing the answer to AI copyright concerns? Lords Communications Committee to hear from experts

The House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee will tomorrow take evidence from representatives of the Copyright Licensing Agency, Fairly Trained and the Design and Artists Copyright Society as part of its inquiry into AI and Copyright.

The inquiry builds on the Committee's previous work on AI and copyright. It has looked at the issue as part of previous reports into UK scaleups, large language models and the creative industries.

The evidence session will start at 2:30pm on Tuesday 2 December with evidence from:

• Serena Dederding, General Counsel and Company Secretary, Copyright Licensing Agency
• Ed Newton-Rex, Chief Executive Officer, Fairly Trained
• Reema Selhi, Head of Policy and International, Design and Artists Copyright Society (DACS)

The session will explore the emerging UK market for licencing copyrighted works for AI usage. Questions will explore the current state of the market; barriers to participation across different sectors and potential solutions for licensing at scale; the role of transparency; and how the Government and regulators might support a coherent, workable framework.
