Law Society comment: Day one protection from unfair dismissals

Ian Jeffery, chief executive officer of the Law Society of England and Wales, said: “The government's decision to give unfair dismissal rights at 6 months of employment marks a significant shift from its original commitment.

“This change brings greater clarity and certainty to legal processes, helping both employers and employees better understand their rights and obligations.

“We have concerns about day-one rights, as they have the potential to overwhelm our already overloaded employment tribunals which are facing their own backlogs, leaving employers and employees alike in limbo.

“Protecting workers' rights is crucial, as is giving legal certainty to businesses, but this will be significantly weakened if the justice system is underfunded and under-resourced.”
