- Hosting the tournament would support the growth of women's
football in Scotland
First Minister has pledged the Scottish
Government's support for the UK's four nations bid to host the
2035 FIFA Women's World Cup.
The Football Association today submitted a formal bid to the
sport's world governing body FIFA which includes two Scottish
stadia, Hampden Park and Easter Road, as potential venues for
matches.
First Minister said:
“If the bid is successful, bringing the 2035 FIFA Women's World
Cup to the UK and hosting games in Glasgow and Edinburgh would
support the growth of women's football in Scotland. I want a
generation of young women and girls to be inspired to participate
in football, increasing physical activity and enhancing
opportunities for equality across sport.
“The event would also bring fans to Scotland, providing
opportunities for hospitality and other parts of the visitor
economy. This is a fantastic chance to showcase Scotland
worldwide, given the truly global nature and broadcast reach of
this growing event.
“Scotland has a rich and proud history of sport, and proven
experience in hosting major events. If the bid is successful, the
2035 FIFA Women's World Cup, alongside next year's Commonwealth
Games in Glasgow, the Grand Depart of the Tour de France in July
2027 and the UEFA European Championships in 2028, aims to leave a
long-lasting and significant sporting legacy.”
Background
Details of funding for the bid and costs for hosting the event
are confidential as this continues to be a live bid process.
The Scottish Government has worked closely with other host
governments, football partners and host city councils on bid
development.
FIFA has the final decision on selection of host cities and
stadia. FIFA's decision on hosts of the 2035 tournament is
expected in April 2026.
