At 10.45am on Tuesday 25 November, the House of Lords Built
Environment Committee will hear evidence from:
- Julia Thrift, Director of Healthier Placemaking at Town and
Country Planning Association (TCPA)
- Professor Rachel Sara, Oscar Naddermier Professor of
Architecture at Birmingham School of Architecture
- Professor Susan Parham, Director at University of
Hertfordshire Urbanism Unit.
This is the fourth evidence session of the second module of the
committee's inquiry into new towns and expanded settlements. This
module is focusing on placemaking and community building,
answering the fundamental question: how can we ensure that new
towns are places where people want to live and where they will
thrive?
This evidence session, which is open to the public, will be held
in Committee Room 3 of the House of Lords and streamed live on
Parliament TV.
Questions likely to be covered in this session include:
- Do the new towns present an opportunity to explore new models
of care? If so, what models might be appropriate and how can
these be designed-in from the start?
- How can new towns be sensitive to the needs of an aging
society, and its impact on health services, and also support the
health and wellbeing of children and young people?
- Numerous studies, including the NHS Healthy New Towns
programme, have set out the principles for constructing healthy
new towns. Is this research being successfully integrated into
new developments?
