Academics to give evidence on UK-India Free Trade Agreement

Tomorrow the House of Lords International Agreements Committee will be hearing from academics as part of its inquiry into the UK-India Free Trade Agreement. The session will focus on the geopolitical context and implications fo rthe bilateral relationship. 

The session will take place on Tuesday 28 October at 4pm and can be followed live on parliament.tv 

Giving evidence will be: 

• Dr Chietigj Bajpaee, Senior Research Fellow, Chatham House 

• Professor Kate Sullivan de Estrada, Associate Professor in the International Relations of South Asia  

• Dr Ganeshan Wignaraja, Visiting Research Fellow, Overseas Development Institute (ODI) 

Topics the committee is likely to cover include: 

• The recent history of the UK-India bilateral relationship and how the FTA will strengthen it 

• The role the evolving geopolitical context has played in the relationship, in particular on trade 

• How foreign policy priorities and strategies have shaped the respective trade priorities of the UK and India during the negotiations  

• Implications of the Agreement for the future bilateral relationship, and the areas in which the relationship could be further advanced 

• Any factors that could pose challenges to the bilateral relationship in future and how they might be overcome.
