ESNZ Committee writes 'Big 6' energy CEOs on non-commodity costs that could "outweigh any reductions in wholesale energy prices"

As widely covered in the media, the Committee recently heard from the big 6 energy retailers in evidence in Parliament that non-commodity costs are rising and could outweigh any reductions in wholesale energy prices.  

With likely increases in electricity demand over the next 25 years, new infrastructure and maintenance costs will need to be paid for regardless of whether the electricity is generated from fossil fuels, low carbon sources or a combination.

The Chair of the Committee has written to the Big Six Energy companies asking: 

• Does the current approach of adding infrastructure costs to bills need to change?  
• What are their recommendations for alternative funding? 
• What savings could be made?
• Does the amount of planned infrastructure all have to be built?
