MS, Cabinet Secretary for
Health and Social Care: I am pleased to announce the
successful conclusion of the 2025-26 tripartite negotiations
between the Welsh Government, NHS Wales, and Optometry Wales. We
have reaffirmed our shared commitment to advancing primary care
optometry and improving access to high-quality eye care services
across Wales.
This year's agreement includes a contract envelope uplift of
approximately £3m, backdated to April 2025, and represents a
significant investment in the future of optometry care and
supports the continued reform of optometry services and provision
of more care and services closer to home in local communities.
Optometry in Wales continues to lead the UK in clinical reform,
with practitioners empowered to work at the top of their licence.
Our approach is rooted in prudent healthcare principles and
reflects a patient-centred ethos that ensures timely, effective,
and equitable care.
The outcomes of this year's negotiations reflect the strength of
our social partnership approach and the dedication of all parties
to delivering world-class optometric care.
Optometry is playing a crucial role in transforming access to eye
care services in Wales. With this agreement, we continue to build
a progressive, inclusive, and clinically robust system that meets
the needs of our communities and supports the professional
development of our workforce.
