Today [Wednesday 8th October 2025] Leader of the
Conservative Party MP will set out a new
‘golden rule' for our economy in her Conference speech, to
deliver a stronger economy for the British public and future
generations.
This rule, to be introduced by the next Conservative Government,
will ensure that for every pound saved half or more will go to
reduce the deficit, and half will go on cutting taxes or spending
to boost the economy.
In her speech, MP is expected to
say:
“The reason the Conservative Party is the only party in Britain
who can be trusted to meet the tests of our
generation…
Is that none of this works without a strong economy.
Securing our borders…
Getting people into work…
Policing our streets…
Defending the nation.
None of it is possible without the money to pay for
it.
And we are the only party with a plan to get our economy back on
track.
It starts with fiscal responsibility.
We have to get the deficit down.
And we must also show how every tax cut or spending increase is
paid for.
So today, I am going to introduce a new Golden Economic
Rule.
Every pound we save will be put to work.
At least half will go towards cutting the deficit.
Because living within our means is our first
priority.
And with the rest, we are going to get our economy growing
again.
And bring down the taxes stifling our economy.
Over the next decade, is going to double the
deficit with her borrowing and tax doom loop.
It's not sustainable and it's not fair.
It is stealing from our children and grandchildren.
And Conservatives will put a stop to it.
We're not going to do what Labour did - promise not to cut to
public spending, only to take away pensioners' winter fuel
payment.
Thanks to the hard work of Mel and the Shadow Cabinet, we have
already identified £47 billion in savings.
Helen has found £23 billion from welfare.
Alex has found £8 billion from the civil service.
Priti has found £7 billion from the overseas aid
budget.
Under our Golden Rule – half of those savings will go towards
reducing Labour's deficit.
And with the rest, we are going to get our economy
growing.
That's the Conservative way.
Responsibility today. Opportunity tomorrow.”
