The Prime Minister opened by welcoming the Cabinet and looking
ahead to the next phase of government, as we move from fixing the
foundations to driving forward the growth and national renewal
that delivers for working people. He said the mission of this
government is to deliver for working people, who are in his
minds-eye as we move onto the next phase in government.
He went on to say that growth underpinned all of the government's
agenda but we needed to go up a gear, including taking decisions
even more quickly. He said he understood the frustrations of the
public who for more than a decade haven't seen their living
standards improve enough while seeing their public services get
worse, and that they were rightly impatient for change. He said
this government will deliver change further and faster, and that
people would rightly judge the government on whether they feel
better off, whether their public services, including the NHS,
have improved, and whether they feel safer in their communities
and feel their borders are more secure.
The Prime Minister said growth and delivery were core priorities
for the upcoming Budget, which will be a key milestone for the
second phase of this government.
The Chancellor said that the entire Autumn, and beyond, must be
about growing the economy in a way that makes working people
better off and provides the revenues we need to fund our public
services. She said the five interest rate cuts since the election
have seen people with tracker mortgages paying around £120 less a
month, and we have seen the UK grow the fastest in the G7 this
year, but that the government must focus on going further to
support the Bank of England in reducing inflation, controlling
public spending, and driving growth. She said the government
would deliver economic stability and public investment so that
consumers have the confidence to spend and businesses have the
confidence to invest, and recent consumer and business surveys
showed confidence increasing. But she said there was more the
government must do to attract international investment, drive
jobs and growth across the country, get Britain working, back the
builders and not the blockers, and buy British.
The Prime Minister emphasised the importance of demonstrating to
working people that the government was driving down costs and
spending their taxes well. He said it was incumbent on the
government to go further and faster in reducing the size of the
civil service, adopting technology and AI across public services,
and reducing the number of regulators. He said phase two of the
government would choose growth, with delivery at its heart.
