Attorney General to give evidence on rule of law

Tomorrow the House of Lords Constitution Committee will be hearing evidence from The Rt Hon. the Lord Hermer KC, Attorney General for England and Wales, Attorney General's Office, as part of its inquiry into the rule of law.

This session will consider the role of the Attorney General within Cabinet, the rule of law and legislation and how public perception and trust in the rule of law is changing. 

The session will take place on Wednesday 10 September 2025 and can be followed live on Parliament TV.   

Questions the committee is likely to ask include:     

• How do the Attorney General and the Lord Chancellor split responsibility for upholding the rule of law within Cabinet? 

• What is the process for considering rule of law implications of policy and what role does the Rule of Law Unit play? 

• What practical steps are being taken to ensure that legislation is compliant with the rule of law? 

• To what extent is it realistic that the Government can influence public understanding of the rule of law?
