Oral evidence 3pm Wednesday 10 September Planning for nuclear
energy generation
Building the “golden age” of energy in the
UK
The Government is relying on new nuclear projects to deliver
energy security and decarbonise electricity generation, reversing
decades of declining capacity.
Announcing funding for the Sizewell C nuclear power plant in
June, the Energy Secretary said: “We need new nuclear to deliver
a golden age of clean energy abundance.”
But what does a clean energy Britain look like? Does the planning
system incentivise development that truly delivers for the nation
in the long term?
The Government has pledged reforms to streamline planning
approvals and provide certainty to nuclear power
developers.
Hearing from representatives of Rolls-Royce SMR, Sizewell C, the
wider nuclear industry, and regulators, the ESNZ Committee will
examine Government proposals to change planning guidance for
approving the next generation of nuclear projects.
