Inquiry launch: The Environment in focus
MPs are inviting experts and members of the public to pitch their
ideas for new inquiries focused on the environment, climate
change and nature.
Today the Environmental Audit Committee launches its new ‘The Environment in
Focus' inquiry, which will consider proposals for the next
topic the Committee should explore. Up to 10 individuals will be
invited to pitch their ideas to MPs in a public session, and the
winner is likely to inform the Committee's next inquiry.
Entrants should submit a proposal of up to 250 words, setting out
what the inquiry should focus on, why the issue matters, and what
actions the Government can take to improve the problem
identified.
In the previous Parliament, a similar exercise saw the
Environmental Audit Committee exploring the relationship between
heat and health and considering how buildings should be adapted
to rising temperatures in its ‘Heat resilience and
sustainable cooling' inquiry.
Other recent inquiries inspired by calls for ideas from the
public include the International Development Committee's inquiry
into the Women, Peace and
Security agenda and the Science and Technology Committee's
2022 inquiry into bacteriophages in the
previous Parliament.
Inquiries currently being held by the Environmental Audit
Committee are seeing MPs exploreenvironmental
sustainability and housing growth, flood resilience in
England, airport expansion and
the regulation of PFAS
chemicals. The Committee has also published reports on
natural
capital,the UK and the
Antarctic and governing the marine
environment.
The call for evidence is available on the Committee's website.
