- Buyers to enjoy savings on seven more car models as part of
the £650m Electric Car Grant.
- Drivers can save £1,500 on the latest EVs added to the
growing list of now 35 qualified models, after the first models
to receive the £3,750 discount were unveiled earlier this week.
- Update is the latest move from the Government to help
families make the switch to electric, whilst boosting skills,
jobs, and growth as part of delivering the Plan for Change.
Drivers across the UK are set to enjoy more savings as £1,500
discounts on seven more of the UK's most popular car brands are
announced today (Tuesday 2 September), bringing the number of
cars eligible under the Electric Car Grant (ECG) to
35.
Models from Toyota, Skoda, Peugeot, Vauxhall and Citroën are the
latest to be added to the £650m ECG scheme, designed to make it
cheaper and easier than ever to own an EV.
The latest update follows the first models being approved for the
maximum £3,750 discount which were unveiled earlier this
week, with yet more models expected to be approved in the coming
weeks.
The grant is slashing prices for consumers across the UK, driving
competition and growth in the UK's EV market, with recent
Autotrader data showing up to an
80% increase in interest for eligible models.
The initiative is driving cost reductions across the industry,
with manufacturers across the sector choosing to offer price cuts
to customers to boost their competitive edge in the market.
The plans also support the UK's automotive industry; a key sector
identified in the UK's modern Industrial Strategy, and which
supports 133,000 jobs in the UK, and a further 320,000 jobs in
the wider economy.
Transport Secretary, said:
“Our Electric Car Grant is slashing prices for consumers, putting
thousands of pounds back into people's pockets, whilst powering
up growth and supporting jobs as part of Plan for Change.
“By cutting upfront costs and boosting our charging
infrastructure we're helping more people become EV owners,
backing industry, and delivering on our promise to make the UK a
clean energy superpower.”
The new eligible models are:
- Vauxhall Vivaro Life Electric
In total the Government has invested £4.5 billion to power up an
electric revolution and help people make the switch to EVs,
securing the UK's position as a world-leader in EV adoption,
after Britain was Europe's largest EV market in 2024.
This includes investing in Britain's charging network, with more
than 83,000 public charging devices currently available – with a
new one added every half an hour over the last 12 months – and
over 100,000 more to come from government's £381 million
Local EV Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund.
RAC head of policy Simon said:
"It's exciting to see that after just seven weeks, 35 models are
now eligible for the new Electric Car Grant as this will enable
more people to make the decision to go electric.
“The grant is doubly positive as it not only incentivises
manufacturers to have ‘greener' production lines, it's also aimed
at the more affordable end of the market, something we'd been
calling on the Government to do for some time."
John Veichmanis, CEO at Carwow Group
“Today's announcement is another big step in making electric cars
more affordable and accessible for drivers across the UK. By
extending the Electric Car Grant to more popular models, the
Government is giving families greater choice and confidence as
many consider the switch to electric.
“With more models now eligible, and ongoing investment in
Britain's charging network, this sends a clear signal to
consumers that the transition to electric is accelerating.
Greater certainty should help stimulate demand, boost
competition, and keep prices down for consumers.”
