Lords Industry and Regulators Committee hears from Office for Nuclear Regulation

The House of Lords Industry and Regulators Committee will hold a one-off evidence session with the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) on Tuesday 22 July.

The ONR is the UK's independent nuclear regulator with the authority to regulate nuclear safety, civil nuclear security and safeguards, and conventional health and safety at the 36 licensed nuclear sites in Great Britain. This includes the existing fleet of operating reactors, waste management and decommissioning sites, together with the regulation of the design and construction of new nuclear facilities.

The session will run from 10am and can be followed live or afterwards on Parliament TV or in person in Committee Room 3, Palace of Westminster.

Giving evidence will be:

  Chair, Office for Nuclear Regulation

Members are expected to ask questions on:

• the statutory objectives and powers of the ONR;
  
  
• safety and cultural issues facing nuclear sites and how risks are managed by nuclear operators;
  
  
• approval processes for new nuclear plant designs and projects;
  
  
• how the ONR cooperates with other relevant authorities in the UK, including the devolved administrations, environmental regulators and local authorities;
  
  
• the relationship between the Government and the ONR.
