Ofcom: Markaz-Al-Huda Limited fined for broadcasting antisemitic hate speech

Ofcom has today imposed a financial penalty on Markaz-Al-Huda Limited after we found its community radio service Salaam BCR, broke our broadcasting rules. 

Our breach decision published on 21 October 2024 found that statements which aired twice on 17 October 2023 amounted to antisemitic hate speech and abusive and derogatory treatment of Jewish people. We also found that the content had clear potential to cause significant offence, without sufficient context to justify its broadcast. 

Community radio stations are not-for-profit services aimed at communities in a local area. Salaam BCR surrendered their community radio licence serving the Bury area in October 2024. 

In light of these breaches of our broadcasting rules, we have imposed a financial penalty of £3,500 on the provider of this community radio service, Markaz-Al-Huda Limited, payable to HM Treasury.
