TfL to face questions in the London Assembly over decline of taxis and private hire vehicle operators

London's taxi industry is in decline, with the number of licenced cabs falling by more than a third in the 10 years to 2023-24.

Private hire vehicles are now increasingly operated by a smaller number of larger operators, with some drivers and unions expressing worries about the impact some of these operators' practices have had on drivers' welfare, employment status, and the safety of passengers.

At a meeting of the London Assembly Transport Committee in May, Members heard from taxi and private hire driver representatives how Transport for London's (TfL) Taxi and Private Hire Action Plan 2025^[1] falls short of addressing all of the concerns – including costs and working conditions.

Tomorrow, the Transport Committee will ask TfL about concerns raised about the plan, and what more they can do to support drivers and operators. Members will also ask about Uber's announcement that it will trial driverless private hire vehicles on London's roads.
