Ahead of tomorrow's Comprehensive Spending Review announcement
(11 June), Campaign for Better Transport has written to the
Chancellor with its six spending priorities to help keep Britain
moving and support green growth.
The transport charity is urging to ensure public transport is
protected and invested in making it better for communities up and
down the country.
Ben Plowman, Chief Executive of Campaign for Better Transport
said: “Public transport investment is good value for money – it
boosts the economy, reduces regional disparities and improves
household finances. Improving public transport also delivers
immediate benefits to communities and individuals and supports
UK-wide growth.”
Campaign for Better Transport's six priorities to keep Britain
moving:
- Prioritise investment in local transport - buses,
walking, cycling and local safety improvements - over large-scale
road schemes
- Support local transport devolution by giving all local
transport authorities long-term funding settlements
- Commit £1 billion in additional revenue funding for buses to
ensure every community has a reasonable level of bus service
- Freeze rail fares and support a root-and-branch
review of the entire fares and ticketing system
- Maintain and renew existing transport infrastructure,
focusing on essential rail upgrades, bus and active travel
infrastructure and fixing potholes
- Support public transport investment through fairer taxation
of airlines and private jets, and by ending the 5p full duty cut.
Mr Plowman added: “If the Government genuinely wants
to kickstart economic growth and break down barriers to
opportunities, investing in public transport can help raise
living standards, boost household incomes and deliver the green
growth the country needs.”
