Experiment
The UK government is committed to using the potential of
AI to drive innovation and efficiency in a safe and
responsible way.
Anyone working in the public sector needs to be equipped for a digital
future. You'll need the right skills and capabilities, with
access to appropriate knowledge, data and tools.
Use these resources to help you in your role.
AI skills
Civil servants can access free
e-learning courses on AI on Civil Service Learning. These
include an introduction to AI, courses on a range of AI
technologies, guidance on the business value of AI and ethics,
and a technical curriculum leading to qualifications.
You can access additional training through the learning
frameworks on Government
Campus.
AI Playbook
The playbook offers guidance on using AI safely, effectively and
securely if you're a civil servant or you work in a public sector
organisation.
It includes 10 principles civil servants should uphold when using
AI. It explains what AI is – including its capabilities,
limitations and risks – and how to select, buy and deploy AI in
government.
AI Insights
This series complements the AI Playbook and its
training
resources by focusing on technical topics that were not
discussed in detail in the playbook. It explains the terminology
and concepts around AI and machine learning (ML), and provides
practical advice on how to implement AI solutions in the public
sector.
New AI Insights articles are published bimonthly and include
blogs, shorter spotlight articles and case studies.
AI community of practice
The cross-government AI community meets
monthly. It provides a place for people interested in AI to share
their experiences, and learn from speakers both inside and
outside government on topics including AI ethics, security and
emerging uses of AI technologies.
Currently, to join this community you must work in a government
department or the NHS, or have a GOV.UK email address. However,
if you work in an academic institution, private sector
organisation or other local government association, you can
express your interest in
presenting at our events or invite the AI community team to
present at your events.
Microsoft 365 Copilot Experiment
Microsoft 365 Copilot is an AI-powered assistant integrated into
Microsoft tools including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and
Teams. This report presents the findings of a large
cross-government experiment led by the Government Digital Service
between September and December 2024.
The experiment involved 20,000 government employees from 12
organisations. It evaluated whether AI assistants could improve
user satisfaction at work, improve the quality of tasks and
reduce the time required to complete tasks.
