Wednesday 4 June,
14.30, Committee Room 6, Palace of
Westminster
On Wednesday 4 June, the Welsh Affairs Committee will hold the
first evidence session of its inquiry into Farming in Wales in
2025: Challenges and Opportunities.
In the session, MPs will hear from three of Wales's largest
groups which represent farmers: National Farmers' Union Cymru,
Farmers' Union of Wales and Wales Young Farmers
Clubs.
The Committee will investigate how well the Welsh agricultural
export market has fared since the UK left the EU. It will
consider the recently announced UK-EU deal, including exploring
the potential implications of the veterinary agreement and its
impact on Welsh farmers. The Committee will also likely explore
the trade deals the UK has signed with Australia, New Zealand and
the United States, and the effects these are having on Welsh
exporters.
MPs may also ask witnesses how the UK Government's proposed
inheritance tax reforms could impact the sector, and what steps
the UK Government should take to ensure any reforms do not
adversely affect the future of Welsh farmers.
Other topics which MPs may raise include the “Barnettisation” of
agricultural funding in the Chancellor's autumn budget and its
potential impact on the industry, as well as concerns about Welsh
farming's access to skilled and seasonal labour.
