The Culture Media and Sport Committee has published the written
evidence submissions received for its Game on inquiry.
The inquiry was launched amid warnings of stagnant rates of
participation in sport and physical activity particularly from
those from lower socio-economic backgrounds, deteriorating
facilities and a fall in physical education in schools. MPs will
examine the health of sport in local communities and schools, and
ways to sustain and grow sporting opportunities for all.
The written evidence submissions published today – available on the
Committee's website – include detailed responses to the
terms of reference
that the Committee set out for the inquiry.
The submissions highlight the lack of adequate facilities,
challenges in attracting and retaining volunteers and an urgent
need for a different approach to sport in schools, including
better links to clubs in the community. Submissions call for a
new sports strategy, the continuation of the Open School
Facilities Fund and better cross-departmental work to get people
involved in sport.
Among the sporting, government and academic organisations that
provided evidence were:
- Sport for Development Coalition
- Local Government Association
You can look for individual submissions using the search bar on
the Committee's website.
The first oral evidence session for this inquiry will be held on
Tuesday 25 February. A further press release will be sent out a
few days prior.
