At the first meeting of the Liaison Committee, Dame MP was elected to chair the Committee in this
parliament.
The Liaison Committee considers the overall work of select
committees, promotes effective scrutiny of Government and chooses
committee reports for debates. It approves expenditure on
overseas travel by select committees and decides how National
Policy Statements should be scrutinised. With most of the powers
of a departmental select committee, it can take written and oral
evidence and regularly questions the Prime Minister.
One of the Committee's first decisions is to invite the Prime
Minister, MP, to give evidence on
December 19. Arrangements will be released in due course.
Thirty-one select committee chairs are eligible to take part in
the committee's work, ranging across departmental committees such
as Defence and Education; cross-cutting committees such as
Environmental Audit and Public Accounts; and those relating to
House of Commons business, such as Procedure and Standards. The
full list of committees and their chairs is set out below. The
motion to create the Liaison Committee was laid on December 4.
Dame chairs the Treasury Committee.

“I am privileged and honoured to chair the Liaison Committee.
There is important work to be done to make sure the select
