, Liberal Democrat MP for
Bath, has signed an Early Day Motion which urges the Government
to call for an immediate bilateral ceasefire in Gaza.
The MP for Bath expressed her complete devastation at the
humanitarian situation in Gaza. The motion addresses the tens of
thousands of innocent Palestinians who have been killed as well
as the million displaced and thousands of homes that have been
destroyed.
Mrs Hobhouse has also joined other Liberal Democrat MPs in
condemning the deplorable attacks that took place on October 7
2023 and urging Hamas to unconditionally and immediately release
the hostages.
The Liberal Democrats have highlighted the illegal settler
violence in the West Bank which has been left unchecked by the
Israeli Government. The Liberal Democrat motion calls for the new
Labour Government to sanction all violent settlers who breach
international law and their connected entities.
, alongside Liberal Democrat
colleagues, have also stressed that a two-state solution based on
1967 borders with Hamas not in power is the only path to regional
security. The party is calling on the Government to immediately
recognise the state of Palestine.
Speaking afterwards, , MP for Bath, said:
“The devastation in Israel and Gaza over the last 9 months, with
the terrible terrorist attacks on 7 October and the subsequent
conflict in Gaza which has seen tens of thousands of innocent
Palestinians killed, has been horrifying.
“We Liberal Democrats have been calling for an immediate
bilateral ceasefire since November 2023. We are absolutely clear
that this is the only way to end the killing, to restore the flow
of desperately needed humanitarian aid, and to get the hostages
back to their loved ones.
“My Liberal Democrat colleagues and I have long advocated a
two-state solution. A lasting peace is the only way to deliver
the security and dignity which Israelis and Palestinians deserve.
We Liberal Democrats have urged the Government to immediately
recognise the state of Palestine, based on 1967 borders.
“I will continue to call for a ceasefire, to stand up for the
rule of international law, and to make the case for the
all-important two state solution which is the only route to an
enduring peace.”
